Relaxing lakeside rambles, classic mountain walks, exhilarating high-level traverses. This part of the world has it all.

First, you have the Lake District.  Voted time and again The Walker’s Favourite UK Destination, there are walks galore for people of all abilities, combined with truly breathtaking views and landscapes.

Most routes are accessed from the major tourist centres via regular public transport services, and many are suitable for wheelchairs or buggies. For those who fancy something a little more challenging, there are windswept summits, rushing streams, crags, ridges, and tarns aplenty. Lots to keep the experienced walker on their toes!

Barrow and the neighbouring Walney Island also offer a great selection of scenic wanders. There’s Channelside Haven - the gateway to the ‘Red Man Way’ - a new coastal footpath running along Walney Channel; The Cistercian Way, which passes through the town; and Walney Greenway that runs along the west coast of the island from Thorney Nook towards Earnse Bay. Other walks include St. George's Walk, Heart of Barrow Walk, Channelside Walk, and the Walney Walk.

Then there’s Morecambe Bay, renowned for its cross-bay walks. These take place between May and September each year, commencing from Arnside and finishing at Kents Bank. Often organised to raise money for charity, they’ve been enjoyed by the likes of the Duke of Edinburgh and Melvyn Bragg.

Please note the cross-bay walks are approximately nine miles long and include cross fast running channels, so only those of reasonable fitness should attempt them.

Go Ape

For even more adventure and exhilaration, Cumbria is also home to two Go Ape sites in Grizedale Forest and Whinlatter, England’s only true mountain forest. The award winning tree top adventure playground is an abundance of rope ladders, zip lines, rope bridges, trapezes and swings. A fun day out for the whole family.
