The Lake District
Inspirational countryside, spectacular lakes and breathtaking mountains - the Lake District is a world of outstanding beauty, and it only takes 25 minutes to get there from Barrow.
The largest of the UK’s National Parks, it’s a popular tourist spot with no end of attractions. From pleasure cruises across Windermere to refreshing walks in Ambleside, if you have a passion for the great outdoors, you’ll love the Lake District, and the fact it’s right on your doorstep.
Dalton-in-Furness
Situated just outside Barrow, Dalton is an historic market town predating mediaeval times. Dalton Castle is well renowned, as are the town's traditional pubs, restaurants and locally owned shops.
It’s also home to South Lakes Wild Animal Park where you’ll find a fascinating selection of animals – everything from lions and tigers, to giraffes and spectacled bears.
Ulverston
Located eight miles from Barrow, Ulverston is an old market town full of cobbled streets, quirky, specialist shops and olde worlde pubs.
It offers an exciting programme of year-round festivals, including Ulverston Carnival, Ulverston Lantern Procession and the magical Dickensian Festival and Christmas markets. There’s also a popular street market every Thursday and Saturday where you’ll find plenty of organic produce and local delicacies.
Askam and Ireleth
A civil parish made up of two coastal villages, Ireleth's origins are as a mediaeval farming village, while Askam was established following the discovery of large quantities of iron ore in the middle of the 18th century.
The Duddon Estuary and surrounding countryside have made the area well known for its wildlife, while the villages' exposed position on the eastern bank facing the Irish Sea has encouraged the establishment of wind energy generation.
The Waterfront
Once complete, The Waterfront Business Park, which is located within a mile of the town centre, will increase Barrow’s reputation as a great place to live, work and play.
Bringing new business space and creating hundreds of jobs, this exciting 60-acre development will not only transform the docks but the whole face of the town with a new marina and cruise ship facilities, marina residential village, shops and restaurants, watersports centre and warm water nature reserve.
Walney Island
You can get to the wonderful Walney Island via Jubilee Bridge at Barrow docks. Also known as the Isle of Walney, it’s the eighth largest marine island in England and reputedly the most windy lowland site in Britain.
The island’s many attractions include its beaches and nature reserves, as well as a number of pubs and restaurants.
Piel Island
Just a stone’s throw from the south end of Walney Island and Roa Island, you’ll find the tranquil 20-acre Piel Island.
Given to the people of Barrow by the Duke of Buccleuch as a war memorial in 1920, this tiny isle is traditionally managed by the ‘King of Piel’ – a.k.a the landlord of the Ship Inn public house, the island’s only watering hole.
The Marina and cruise ship terminal
When complete, the exclusive multi-million pound, 400 berth marina will feature a state-of-the-art boat lift that will accommodate six boats simultaneously, whilst a new cruise ship terminal will establish Barrow as the international sea gateway to the Lake District.
Marina Village
This will bring 600 new waterside homes, shops, bars and restaurants, a sports ground, children’s play area, green, open spaces and pedestrian and cyclist-friendly streets. With completion expected in December 2013, the Marina Village will create an extremely desirable and vibrant community.
Watersports centre and nature reserve
Barrow’s Ramsden Dock has already hosted Formula 2 National Grand Prix Power Boat racing and soon it’ll be home to its very own watersports centre with year-round power boat racing, canoeing, sailing and windsurfing. Along with the planned warm water nature reserve, the town’s industrial dockland area is being transformed into a wonderful green space and highly popular leisure destination.
