INTRODUCTION

Referral schemes have become a key part of the way in which many companies recruit externally.  They are designed to supplement existing recruitment processes through direct employee involvement.

1. Eligible job categories 

The Submarine Solutions scheme only applies to specific jobs in recognised critical or scarce skill areas for which external recruitment is required. The scheme's job list is updated as required to reflect current recruitment needs. The scheme encourages employees to identify suitable external applicants for these roles. All the following external vacancies currently fall under the remit of the scheme:

Barrow site

Designers (41223) - BAE Systems Designers should be ideally qualified to HNC level or above in a relevant engineering subject and have experience in an engineering environment.

Nuclear Engineers (35952) – BAE Systems Nuclear Engineers have a reputation for timely, thorough and cost-effective management of nuclear licensing and safety case preparation.

Design Engineers (44926 Mechanical/ 37306 Electrical/ 42555 Structural) – BAE Systems Design Engineers are responsible for designing systems, specifying equipment and components and delivering design justification  and build support for our submarine programme.

Supply Chain Managers (42109) – BAE Systems Supply Chain Managers proactively source and deliver material to support the company’s high profile contracts.

Commissioning Engineers (44781) – BAE Systems Commissioning Engineers generally test and set to work any system or equipment which follows a standard pattern.

Contracts Managers (42472) – BAE Systems Contracts Managers manage sub-contractors and business development opportunities.  They are also responsible for co-ordinating phase review and tender verifications.

Radiation Protection (35954) - Experienced Health Physicists seeking to build on current radiation protection knowledge and expertise are required.  Responsible for providing advice to various internal customers and external agencies on a broad range of radiological protection issues related to the nuclear submarine build and commissioning programme at the site.

Operability Engineers (38367) – BAE Systems Operability Engineers utilise their past experiences to influence the design of future submarines.

Welding Engineers (42583) – BAE Systems Welding Engineers provide fast and professional advice and support covering welding technology.

Product Safety Engineers (35955) – BAE Systems Product Safety Engineers' challenges are demanding, assuring that our products are fit for purpose for the entire product lifecycle.

Metallurgists (42581) – BAE Systems Metallurgists will provide technical advice on practical application of both metallic and non-metallic materials technology in support of design and manufacturing.

Southern sites

Principal Commercial Officers (42467) – The role involves change proposals, managing sub-contractors and business development opportunities.

Principal Cost Engineers (45421) – The role involves preparation of estimates for major changes, sub-contract cost assessment activities and supporting the preparation of cost engineering as well as negotiating with suppliers and customers.

Combat Systems Managers (46928/46554/47300/47303) – The role involves providing accurate progress information, reporting costs and setting up appropriate tasks for monitoring as well as planning all combat systems and support.

Combat Systems Engineers (46349/38247) – The roles involve becoming part of the integration team and will be required to contribute to the identification of issues emerging from the integration and testing. Additionally they will be required to produce evidence in support of acceptance activities for both internal and external (MoD) use as well as liaising with both internal and external customers as required.

Combat Systems Engineers (38675) – This role involves working under the direction and guidance of experienced Sonar Systems Engineers. The successful candidate would be required to undertake some of the range of systems engineering tasks relating to the selection, installation, acceptance and support of submarine sonar systems.
 

All other vacancies are out of scope for this scheme.

2. The aims of the scheme 

a) To increase the number of applicants for jobs within Submarine Solutions in business critical or scarce skill categories
b) To reduce recruitment costs by encouraging direct applicants instead of paying agency fees
c) To raise awareness internally and externally of opportunities available
d) To increase the calibre of candidates applying


3.  How the scheme will achieve this 

a) By BAE Systems employees submitting candidates they know, with their permission, who might be suitable for key posts included in the scheme.
b) Employees are likely to put forward candidates who they believe stand a good chance of being appointed, based on how well their skills and values fit into the organisation.
c) The employee receives £1000 if their referred candidate is successful and remains with the business for a minimum of 12 months – a cost effective recruitment fee


4.  Who qualifies for a scheme payment?

 The scheme is open to all permanent BAE Systems Submarine Solutions employees (employees paid by BAE Systems directly) with the exception of:

a) Senior managers and directors (Executive Grade 3 and above)
b) Anyone that may be involved in, or could influence the decision to recruit, e.g. Hiring Managers, Assessors.

Nominations made by agency/sub contract workers who have been working for Submarine Solutions for greater than 12 months will be considered on a case by case basis.

5.  Who is considered to be “in scope” ?

You are entitled to put forward all candidates who are listed as in scope on the website, with the exception of:

a) Current BAE Systems employees (UK and Rest of the World)
b) Sub-contractors/agency workers currently working within BAE Systems (UK and Rest of the World)
c) Ex-employees who have left BAE Systems within the last two years.  This includes any employee who left under a voluntary release scheme and employees who have resigned from the company.  Note: ex-employees who have left under a Compulsory Redundancy Scheme are eligible to be put forward. However, should they be successful in returning to BAE Systems, and dependent on their leaving date, they may be required to pay a portion of their redundancy pay back to the company.
d) Graduates recruited via the Graduate Recruitment Programme.  However, if a current BAE Systems employee recommends an external graduate to take up a direct appointment into an eligible category, then payment will be made.
e) Apprentices.
f) Any candidate who has applied for a vacancy within Submarine Solutions within the last six months, irrespective of whether their application was successful or not.
g) Employees of a company in a redundancy situation that BAE Systems has already consulted with regards to assisting its employees to find alternative employment.


6. Who will run the scheme? 

The resourcing team is responsible for the scheme policy, and has the sole right to make modifications at any time without prior notice.

XHRS will administer the scheme.

7. What payments will be made? 

An award of £1,000 (subject to normal tax deductions) will be paid in two stages:

a) £500 will be paid once the candidate has commenced employment. The month in which it is paid will be dependent on payroll cut off and the relevant authorisation being received in a timely manner.

b) A further £500 will be paid once the candidate has completed 12 months satisfactory continuous service, providing that the referrer is still employed within Submarine Solutions.  However, if the referrer has moved in to another business area as a strategic business requirement, the second payment will be honoured.

8. When a scheme payment will not be paid (in addition to the definitive list in 5 above)

a) If the candidate is referred via the Submarine Solutions Recruit a Friend Scheme but is subsequently placed into another BAE Systems business area.
b) If a referred candidate is recruited on a fixed term contract.
c) The Submarine Solutions scheme administrator has the right to suspend or cancel the initial £500 payment if the successful candidate leaves the company in the first month of employment.
d) If the referrer subsequently leaves the company.


9. Adjudication process 

Should any referral require adjudication, XHRS will forward this to the resourcing team for adjudication.  XHRS will then notify the referrer of the decision.   The adjudication decision will be final, and no other correspondence will be entered in to once this decision has been communicated to the referrer.


10. How an application is made 

The Referral Application Form can only be obtained from the BAE Systems Submarine Solutions intranet, and the form must be submitted with a candidate's CV at the time of the candidate’s original application. Retrospective referral forms will not be accepted.
