REMEMBRANCE DAY POPPY MAKING

BAE Systems Submarine Solutions has been teaming up with the general public and local schoolchildren to help make thousands of commemorative poppies for this year’s Remembrance Day.

More than 20 primary and secondary schools in Barrow and Dalton have agreed to get involved, as have BAE Systems’ partners The Veterans Association, The Royal British Legion, the North West Evening Mail and Barrow Borough Council.

The original target of making 25,000 poppies for local distribution has already been surpassed - in a matter of days!

Every year representatives from BAE Systems travel to The Royal British Legion poppy factory in Richmond to help produce the 38 million poppies required for Remembrance Day.

Paula Short, a Corporate Responsibility Communications Advisor at BAE Systems Submarine Solutions, said: “This year we wanted to show our support locally, to honour those who have fallen in past conflicts and to pay tribute to the bravery of the thousands of servicemen and women who are currently serving with our armed forces.”

From 21 September until 9 October, BAE Systems Submarine Solutions and The Veterans Association will visit schools to talk to pupils about the history of Remembrance Day and also explain what a veteran is.

Terry Spurling, Chairman’s of the Barrow Veterans Association, said: “The discussion aims to inform the children that Remembrance is not just about those who lost their lives in the two world wars but also includes those who have been affected by more recent conflict.”

Following the discussion, children will participate in a workshop to make poppies, which will then be sold in the area of the respective school.

If you would like further information about the campaign, please contact Miss Short, on (01229) 873422.
