The Furness Peninsula offers all types of sea, coarse and game angling, with most angling carried out in the Lake District or on the fringes amid outstanding scenery.
Sea angling
The fishing marks along the southern edge of the Cumbrian coastline are home to a wide variety of species, such as bass, plaice, mullet and the occasional turbot – yet it remains one of the most under fished areas in the country.
In autumn and winter, night fishing yields a mixture of codling, whiting, bass and flatfish with locally-dug lugworm the premier bait. In summer, when sport is dominated by bass, flounder and plaice, fresh peeler crab is the bait of choice.
Coarse angling
Three clubs control the fishing for roach, bream, perch, tench, carp and pike in Furness’s local ponds:
Furness Fishing Association controls 11 ponds in Furness, the majority being at Roanhead. For more information visit www.ffacoarse.org.uk
Barrow Angling Association has recently opened a coarse fishery – mainly for carp - called Cavendish Dock, with reports of catches up to 30lb.
Ulverston Angling Association controls several ponds and Ulverston Canal.
Pike fishing
Anglers travel hundreds of miles for the large pike in Windermere and Esthwaite Water. The latter is a working trout farm and trout fishery with any method of fishing permitted.
Game angling
Sites for river fishing and sea trout, salmon, brown trout and even grayling can be accessed within an hour's drive from Barrow and, only 60 miles away in the Trough of Bowland, you can experience one of the best fly fisheries in England.
